Why do I feel so lethargic?
How can I get an Abundance of Energy?
Did you know that the most frequent complaint that I hear is about the lack of energy?
Here are the nine most common reasons that we’ve found for low energy:
- Wrong foods for your metabolic type. Some people do well on higher amount of carbohydrates in their diet and some people do better on a higher protein and fat diet. Also it depends on your constitution (whether you are cold or hot person)
- Dehydration, people simply don’t drink enough of the right types of fluids.
- Vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as B-vitamins, magnesium and vitamin C. These are key energy boosting nutrients. Eating foods that are low in these nutrients is a common reason for these deficiencies.
- Erratic blood sugar levels (high and low) which are often characterised by a mid-afternoon energy crash, sugar cravings and reliance on stimulants such as chocolate, tea, coffee and sweets.
- Undiagnosed Food intolerances (wheat and dairy are common culprits).
- Stress and hormone imbalances (adrenal and thyroid dysfunction).
- Digestive problems, such as Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
- Hidden infections, often caused by prescribed medications.
- And perhaps the most common, lack of sleep!
The good news is that there are a few things that you can do right now to have an ABUNDANCE of Energy.
- Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of good quality water and herbal teas such as green tea, chamomile, peppermint, fennel, liquorice, rooibos (red bush),….
- Include fresh fruit and vegetables especially green vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes, good quality meat and fish as a source of vitamin C, magnesium and B-vitamins.
- Include protein with every meal especially breakfast to keep your blood sugar more stable during the day.
- Exclude wheat and/or dairy from your diet and see if you feel better.
- Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Avoid using computers or other electronic devices at least 1h before bed. Read a book, listen to music or have a bath to have a good night’s sleep.
- Chew your food well and eat slowly (just like your mom told you to do) in a relaxed atmosphere to help your digestion. Did you know it takes 20 min to feel full.
Finally get your nutrition right and discover what keeps you lethargic and what to do to regain your energy which you should be experiencing naturally every day.
